About the museum
The Holmesdale Natural History Club was founded in 1857 and is a registered charity. Its aim is to promote the study of natural history, local history, archaeology and geology around Reigate, and it keeps its collections in its own museum building at 14 Croydon Road.
The collections include a large group of stuffed birds, herbarium specimens and local history and archaeology material, and some specimens were collected as early as the 18th century. The herbarium includes plants gathered by James Brewer for the first Flora of Surrey, which the club published in 1863.
The club runs a programme of evening lectures in the museum lecture room, usually on the third Wednesday of the month, together with walks and social events. The museum is open to the public only on selected open days, such as Heritage Open Days.
