About the museum
The museum is named after John Hastie, a local merchant who left money to build a museum for the people of Strathaven. The original museum building stood on Threestanes Road overlooking John Hastie Park. The town’s museum closed in 2011.
After the closure a group of local people formed the Strathaven John Hastie Museum Trust, a Scottish charity run by volunteers, to keep the town’s history alive. The trust now runs the museum from premises at 10 Todshill Street, so the old Threestanes Road building is no longer the visitor address.
The museum tells the story of Strathaven, a market town known for weaving and farming, and of the surrounding parish of Avondale. It shows a changing programme of exhibitions and events, often using objects and photographs from the John Hastie and Strathaven collections, which the trust is working to bring out of council storage. Its long-term aims are to find a permanent building and to gain accreditation with Museums Galleries Scotland.
