About the museum
The Royal Burgh of Lanark Museum Trust was set up in 1988 to create a museum telling the story of Lanark, one of the oldest burghs in Scotland. The town was a favoured hunting area of Scottish kings and has links with William Wallace and Robert the Bruce.
In 1990 the trust bought a former hall in the town and converted it into a museum. The first exhibition, on transport, opened in spring 1991, and a new exhibition has been mounted every year since. The trust is a member of the Scottish Museums Council and a founder member of the South Lanarkshire Museums Forum.
The museum is run by volunteers. Its collection covers the shoe, glove, saddlery, weaving and knitwear trades of the town, its livestock markets, the Covenanters, local military history, aviation, education and farming, as well as well-known local people such as William Lithgow and Lord Braxfield.
