About the museum

The museum grew from the wish of a small group of Severn Valley Railway members to find a home for their personal railway collections. They met in November 1985 and formed a charitable trust, which was registered in 1987. The trust is independent of the railway, which was a deliberate choice so that the museum would not add to the railway's costs.

The museum occupies a two-storey goods warehouse that the Great Western Railway built in 1878. It was used to store grain and wool for the local mills and carpet industry, later became a parcels depot and was left derelict by the early 1980s. After lengthy negotiations over the lease, volunteers adapted the building, and the museum opened in August 1990.

The ground floor shows smaller railway items such as station signs, signalling equipment and locomotive nameplates, together with a former Midland Railway booking office and hands-on exhibits including a telephone exchange and a signal lever frame. The upper floor holds a library and a large photograph archive that can be consulted on request. Outside there is a small collection of rolling stock and a relocated signal box. A former nursery building next door is used for events and is planned as an archive and research centre.
