About the museum
Llanidloes Museum of Local History and Industry was established in 1930 and was first housed in the Old Market Hall. In 1995 it moved to the ground floor of the Town Hall in Great Oak Street, where it shares the building with the town library.
The Town Hall is a Grade II listed Arts and Crafts building by Frank Shayler and Thomas Ridge, opened in 1908. It was paid for by descendants of David Davies of Llandinam and was planned to combine a market hall with a meeting place for the borough council.
The museum shows the history of the borough of Llanidloes over about the last three hundred years. Its exhibits stand among the library shelves and cover the Chartist outbreak of 1839, the local lead mines and the woollen industry. The last room has three diorama cases with late Victorian scenes: a kitchen and laundry, a parlour and a naturalist’s study.
