About the museum
Lochgoin Farm near Fenwick in East Ayrshire is closely tied to the Covenanters, the Scottish Presbyterians who resisted royal control of the church in the 17th century. During the persecution known as the Killing Time (1680–1688) the farm was a refuge for them. Its owners, the Howie family, supported the Covenanter cause, and well-known preachers such as Alexander Peden visited the farm.
The Howie family kept records and relics of these events, and these formed the core of the Covenanters’ museum, set up in the 20th century. The collection includes manuscripts, weapons, clothing and other items linked to the Covenanters, such as the Fenwick drum and a sword from the Killing Time.
The museum is run by the Lochgoin and Fenwick Covenanters Trust, which also offers talks, school outreach packs and online material on the martyrs, battles and historical locations.
