About the museum
Lydd Town Museum was set up in 1979 to record and share the history of Lydd and the surrounding area. It is curated and managed by the Friends of Lydd, a registered charity, and is staffed entirely by volunteers. The museum occupies the Old Fire Station on Queens Road.
The displays reflect the varied history of the town and the Romney Marsh area. Subjects include the fire service, the army and the Royal Flying Corps, lighthouses, fishing at Dungeness and farming, together with many other local activities and events. The exhibits are changed regularly, so returning visitors often find something new.
The museum depends on donations to cover its running costs. It also takes part in the Wheels of Time scheme, which encourages children to visit museums and collect badges.
