About the museum

The museum stands beside the site of RAF Brenzett, an advanced landing ground on about 300 acres of flat marshland on Romney Marsh. The site was chosen in 1942, building work began in 1943 and the airfield opened in September 1943 as part of RAF Fighter Command. Spitfires of No. 122 Squadron flew from here from August 1943, and in 1944 a Polish Mustang wing used the field, mainly against flying bombs. The airfield closed in December 1944 and returned to farming.

The Brenzett Aeronautical Museum opened close to the former airfield in 1972, in old Women's Land Army buildings. Today it trades as the Romney Marsh Wartime Collection and is run by an independent charitable trust. The trust is dedicated to the memory of everyone, friend or foe, who served their country in wartime.

The collection includes wartime equipment, remains recovered from aircraft crash sites, memorabilia and a display of bomb disposal equipment. A Barnes Wallis bouncing bomb is shown outside. Volunteers have steadily widened the displays to cover many aspects of the war.
