About the museum
Madame Tussauds goes back to Marie Tussaud, who learned wax modelling in Paris and later toured Britain with her collection of figures from 1802. In 1835 she settled the exhibition permanently in Baker Street in London, where it became a popular attraction showing royalty, politicians and notorious criminals.
The exhibition moved to its present site on Marylebone Road in 1884 in a purpose-built building. The original Chamber of Horrors, with figures of murderers and relics of crime, became one of its best-known features. Much of the building and many figures were damaged by fire in 1925 and by bombing during the Second World War, and the collection was rebuilt afterwards.
Today the museum is a self-paced walk-through attraction over three floors, with themed zones for film, music, sport, fashion and the royal family. Visitors can also take the Spirit of London ride through the history of the city and enter the Chamber of Horrors, which is recommended for ages 16 and over. It forms part of the Merlin Entertainments group of attractions.
