About the museum

The Sherlock Holmes Museum opened in 1990 at 221b Baker Street, the address that Arthur Conan Doyle gave to his fictional consulting detective. The house is a four-storey Georgian townhouse dating from 1815 and was used as a lodging house for many decades. It is a listed building, and a blue plaque on the front records Holmes's supposed residence there.

According to the stories, Holmes lived at this address from 1881 to 1904, and the museum has arranged its rooms to recall that period. Visitors move through small, intimate rooms furnished with Victorian pieces and curiosities, together with objects, letters and props linked to Holmes, Dr Watson and other characters from the cases.

Costumed staff and a uniformed policeman at the door add to the atmosphere, and groups receive a short introduction in Holmes's study before exploring the house at their own pace. The museum shop sells Sherlock Holmes gifts and memorabilia, and an online shop is also run by the museum.
