About the museum
Measham Museum grew out of a local history group whose members met weekly in rooms above an undertaker's business in the village. The museum itself opened on 1 December 1992 next to the community office, and in its first year it attracted more than a thousand visitors and received a commendation from the county museums service.
In 2008 the museum moved to the old Measham railway station, a building that served the village from 1873 until passenger services ended in 1931. After restoration the building was handed over to the museum in April 2009 and the displays reopened in spring 2009. The museum gained accreditation in 2011 and is run by volunteers.
A central part of the collection comes from two local doctors, father and son, who kept letters, photographs, documents and objects that show village life over almost a century. The museum also shows Measham ware, the dark brown glazed teapots and tea-table ware, often decorated with flowers and birds, that is traditionally linked with canal families; the earliest piece on show is dated 1886. Past temporary displays have covered mining, the Second World War, notable local people, lost buildings, weddings, schools and the railway.
