About the museum
Shackerstone station opened in 1873 on the Ashby and Nuneaton Joint Railway. Its position at a junction made it an important place on the line, and an inspector was based here. In 1902 King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra stopped at the station on their way to Gopsall Hall; platform 1 was raised for the occasion, leaving a feature still known as the platform hump.
Passenger services were withdrawn in 1931 and the station closed completely in 1965. It was later listed as a Grade II building and preserved. Today it is the terminus and headquarters of the Battlefield Line Railway, which is run by volunteers of the Shackerstone Railway Society and operates heritage steam, diesel and railcar trains to Market Bosworth and Shenton.
Visitors can look round the Victorian station, the railwayana museum beside the booking hall, the rolling stock and the loco shed, which is a short walk away, or ride the train. A tea room serves refreshments, and the Ashby Canal passes close by.
