About the museum
The museum is housed in the gatehouse of Minster Abbey on the Isle of Sheppey. The building dates from the 12th century, was the entrance to the abbey of SS Mary and Sexburga, and is listed Grade I. It was handed back to the church in 1928, and in 1967 the Ecclesiastical Commissioners offered it to the council, with the Archbishop of the time stressing the importance of preserving it.
In the late 1970s the council leased the gatehouse to the Sheppey Local History Society, whose members converted it into a local history museum. The museum opened to the public in 1982 and is still run by volunteers from the society, with admission kept low so that as many people as possible can learn about the history of the island.
The collections cover the island in the First and Second World Wars, Victorian domestic life and dress, vintage radios and gramophones, and the fossils for which Sheppey is known. The museum also keeps the largest collection of the Sheerness Times Guardian newspaper from 1890 onwards, a useful resource for family and local history research, and paintings by the local artist Harold Batzer. A roof platform gives views in almost every direction.

Because of the age and size of the building, the museum says it is not suitable for wheelchair users, prams or pushchairs, and the stairs may be difficult for visitors with limited mobility. Pushchairs can be left outside at the owner’s risk. A touch-screen system installed in 2025 is intended to make the collection easier to explore for visitors with mobility difficulties.
