About the museum
Milton Regis Court Hall is a timber-framed building dating from around 1450 and is listed Grade II*. It served as the medieval court hall of Milton Regis, the town's civic centre, and was the seat of the court and administration for the surrounding Hundred. It also acted as the guildhall and trading standards office for the market, where an elected Portreeve oversaw trade and set prices for goods arriving at the port.
Below the hall are two small gaol cells. When the courts were not sitting, the building was used as a school for local boys. The hall is one of only two buildings of this type left in Kent, the other being Fordwich Town Hall.
The building has been restored and now houses a museum of local history. It is looked after by the Friends of Milton Regis Court Hall, a volunteer charity set up to preserve and maintain it. The hall can also be visited by school and other groups outside the normal opening days.
