About the museum

Moffat Museum opened in 1984 in an old bakehouse in the centre of Moffat and is run entirely by volunteers. In 2013 it expanded into the adjoining building, which enlarged the exhibition space and created a direct entrance from the pavement on Churchgate. The extension was paid for by a bequest from an Australian benefactor, the Heritage Lottery Fund, a wind farm fund, Foundation Scotland and local fundraising. It was reopened on 10 August 2013 by a curator from the National Museum of Scotland.

The museum tells the story of the town and the surrounding area through its displays, a series of web pages on local histories and family histories, and an ecomuseum project. Special exhibitions are held on the ground floor. Volunteers also run projects such as an oral history project, Moffat Voices, and a loan box scheme, and they are compiling a document archive. The museum is a registered charity and an accredited museum on the Museums Galleries Scotland map.
