About the museum
Crawfordjohn is a small village in the hills of South Lanarkshire, near the Dumfriesshire border, surrounded by farming and forestry. Residents once worked on local farms or supplied them with goods and services, and as village life changed the old hall was replaced and the churches closed.
One of the churches, built in the 18th century, was bought from the General Trustees of the Church of Scotland in 1988 with the idea of starting a museum of rural life. Local people were asked to donate old objects, and an opening exhibition over two weekends in the summer of 1990 drew the community in. Regular weekend openings began in 1991.
The museum was registered in 2004 and gained full accreditation with Museums Galleries Scotland in 2011. It is independent and self-supporting, and a small group of local volunteers runs it. The collection numbers many hundreds or thousands of items, only some of which can be shown at any one time.
