About the museum
Mold Museum is part of Mold Library on Earl Road in the centre of the Flintshire town of Mold. It tells the history of the town and its surroundings from prehistoric times to the twentieth century, using objects and information panels. The museum is run by Aura, the charitable organisation that provides leisure services in Flintshire.
In June 2024 the museum reopened after a refurbishment that cost about 360,000 pounds, of which 300,000 pounds came from the Welsh Government. Better cases and environmental conditions made it possible to show some items for the first time, including 12,000-year-old animal bones from the last Ice Age found at Gop Cave. The new displays use the idea of threads of inspiration to link the artistic talents of the town.
One highlight is a replica of the Bronze Age gold cape found in Mold in 1833; the original is in the British Museum. Two rooms recreate the tailor's workshop and the parlour and study of the Welsh novelist Daniel Owen, who worked as a tailor in the town. Paintings by the artist Richard Wilson, who drew on the local landscape, are on show as well, and the displays also cover the nearby Rhydymwyn Valley, where early research into nuclear weapons took place.
