About the museum
Mr Vacuum Cleaner is a vacuum cleaner shop in Heanor that describes itself as offering sales, service, repairs and a museum. It was opened by James Brown, who has loved vacuum cleaners since early childhood, and the museum side began in 2010 with support from the Prince's Trust. The museum is at 23 Market Street.
In 2012 the collection of more than 300 machines was recognised by Guinness World Records as the largest collection of vacuum cleaners. It has grown since then and the owner has lost count of the machines. They include models from about a century of production, from early hand-pumped and bellows cleaners of the 1910s and 1920s to a wide range of Hoover, Electrolux and Kirby cleaners from the mid-20th century onwards.
The museum is part of a working shop, so the displays fill the premises alongside the repair business. The museum has attracted visitors from across the country, including the television presenter Warwick Davis, and is particularly popular with families in school holidays.
