About the museum
Museum 4 Watton is a charity run by volunteers. The idea for a town museum was first put forward in June 2014 with the backing of Watton Town Council, and a Heritage Lottery Fund grant paid for the conversion of two rooms in Wayland Hall, the Victorian town hall built in 1853 in Gothic Revival style. A ground-floor room became a research room and a first-floor room an exhibition area. The museum opened to the public on 16 March 2018.
In its first two years it welcomed almost ten thousand visitors before the pandemic closed it in March 2020. It reopened in stages in 2021, and the exhibition room was rearranged in chronological order. Later the museum shared an enlarged space with the town council chamber, where it displays cabinets on the history of Wayland Hall, the town’s shops and societies, local industry and its churches.
The collection includes a very old flint hand axe, the records of the manorial Court Baron from 1674 to 1924, a full-size model of a Roman skeleton found locally in 2010 and memorabilia from RAF Watton and the wartime US air depot. The museum also holds a collection of Norfolk postal history from before the Penny Black and part of the photographic archive of Ruth Dwornik. A coffee bar serves visitors.
