About the museum
The museum grew out of the collection of the consumer historian Robert Opie, who began collecting everyday products and promotional material more than 50 years ago. He held his first exhibition, The Pack Age, at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1975, and the first museum, the Museum of Packaging and Advertising, opened in Gloucester in 1984.
The collection later moved to Notting Hill, and the museum became a registered charity in 2002. It is now at 111–117 Lancaster Road.
Its main permanent display is the Time Tunnel, which follows life from the Victorian period to the digital age through packets, tins, toys, posters and other everyday objects. Temporary exhibitions, talks, workshops and a learning programme for school groups complement the display, and there is a cafe, a gift shop and a small subtropical garden. The first item in the collection, acquired in 1963, was a packet of sweets from a vending machine.
