About the museum
Loughgall lies at the heart of the story of the Orange Institution, which was formed in 1795 after the Battle of the Diamond nearby. Sloan's House stands on Main Street in the village and is presented as the place where the Order came into being.
The museum is one of two interpretive centres run by the Museum of Orange Heritage, the other being Schomberg House in Belfast. Both opened in the summer of 2015 as a joint project of the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland and the County Armagh Grand Orange Lodge, with support from the EU PEACE III Programme.
The permanent exhibition follows the origins of the Order and also looks at the Plantation and the history of the Loughgall area before 1795. Documents on display include some of the first warrants signed by the new Order. A highlight is Sloan's Parlour, a room recreated with graphics, audiovisual technology and objects to show how it may have looked when the Order was founded. The centre also offers research facilities and an outreach programme for schools and community groups.
