About the museum
The University of Edinburgh has collected zoological specimens since 1692, when the first exhibits were shown in Old College. Over more than 300 years the collection has grown to include specimens and objects from the entire range of invertebrate phyla and vertebrate classes.
The collections are kept in the Ashworth Laboratories at the university's King's Buildings site, which were built in the late 1920s for the Zoology Department and now house part of the School of Biological Sciences. Most of the exhibits on show today date from the 1920s. The main display is the Aubrey Manning Gallery, named after the Professor of Natural History from 1973 to 1997, where specimens are arranged by taxonomy to show the diversity of the animal kingdom.
