About the museum
New Quay Heritage Centre is a small community museum at the harbour of New Quay on Cardigan Bay. It is staffed by volunteers, sponsored by New Quay Town Council and supported by Ceredigion Museum, and it holds a range of local artefacts and pictures that tell the story of the town.
The subject matter reflects the town’s past as a harbour and shipbuilding place. Until the early nineteenth century New Quay was a handful of cottages around a natural harbour. After the harbour act of 1835 a stone pier was built, trade grew and shipbuilding began, and by the 1840s several hundred workmen were employed in the yards. Shipbuilding had ended by 1870, but many local men continued to go to sea, and New Quay captains sailed some of the last square riggers around the world.
The centre depends on volunteers, and its opening hours have varied with how many helpers are available.
