About the museum
Nuneaton Museum and Art Gallery is the museum of the borough of Nuneaton and Bedworth in Warwickshire. It is housed in a building in Riversley Park, a short walk from the town centre, and is run by Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council. Entry is free and donations are welcome.
The collection holds more than 15,000 objects and photographs. It ranges from fossils over 150 million years old to everyday items from 150 years of local life, objects of travel and exploration from around the world, and fine and decorative art. Items are shown in permanent displays and in a programme of changing exhibitions, and some pieces are brought out of store for hands-on sessions.
The local history gallery on the ground floor looks at over a thousand years of the borough, its industries and its people, including the entertainer Larry Grayson and the Royal Gurkha Rifles. A further ground-floor room recreates the parlour and writing room of the Victorian novelist George Eliot, who grew up in the area, and shows objects linked to her life and books. The first-floor picture gallery presents paintings and sculpture from the museum's own collection.
The museum also runs events for families, talks, drop-in craft sessions and school workshops, and a tearoom run by an independent operator serves visitors.
