About the museum
The Police Museum was set up in the 1980s to explain the unique and often contentious history of policing in Northern Ireland. It is housed in a former sergeant's married quarters at Police Service of Northern Ireland headquarters in Brooklyn, Belfast.
The collection includes police uniforms, equipment, medals and archives from the early 1800s to the present day, together with weapons that were used against the police over the years. A reference library and archive help visitors trace ancestors who served in the Royal Irish Constabulary and the early Royal Ulster Constabulary, and academic researchers can use police records from the 1840s onwards.
The museum is also the base of the Police Historical Society (N.I.), which promotes research into police history.
