About the museum
Purton Museum is run by the Purton Museum and Historical Society and is housed on the first floor of The Institute building in the High Street. It collects only objects that record life and work in the parishes of Purton, the Lydiards and Braydon, and it does not accept duplicates or items in poor condition.
The collection includes agricultural hand tools and dairy equipment that reflect the village’s farming past, along with domestic and trade objects, toys, sport, war, religion and local photographs. A small archaeological collection includes a few flint tools and Roman pottery from a kiln site. The society’s website also publishes research on local topics such as the 1744 enclosure map, Ridgeway Mill, Ringsbury Camp, village pubs and chapels, and the Romans in Purton.
The museum puts on a yearly exhibition on a village theme. Recent subjects have included village leisure, clubs and festivals, and local food outlets and crockery.
