About the museum

Pushkin House began in the 1950s as the Pushkin Club, set up by Russian emigres in London; its legal name was Forum Houses until it was officially renamed Pushkin House in 2005. Its first home in Ladbroke Grove worked as a membership club. In the early 2000s it moved to Bloomsbury and became a public-facing organisation.

The house at 5a Bloomsbury Square is a Grade II listed building. Its Music Room serves as the main exhibition space, and the building also has a screening room, a meeting room, a bar and a bookshop. The programme combines contemporary art exhibitions with talks, book events, film screenings, reading groups and workshops about Russian, Eastern European, Caucasian and Central Asian culture and identity.

Pushkin House describes itself as independent of the Russian state. It is also home to the Pushkin House Book Prize. It has no permanent collection and no historic displays; visitors come for the changing exhibitions and events.
