Queen Mary's Hospital Museum

Opening hours

About the museum

Queen Mary's Hospital in Roehampton began in 1915, when Roehampton House became Britain's first specialist hospital for the rehabilitation of soldiers who had lost limbs in the First World War. After the war about 41,000 survivors had returned without one or more limbs, and the hospital became known for artificial limbs and rehabilitation. Later it served the local community as a district general hospital.

The Archives and Museum Group was founded in 1999 to find, record and secure hospital documents, objects and other material and to make them available to the public. It is now a special interest group of the Friends of Queen Mary's Hospital. A small museum opened in May 2010 in the Bader Reception area on the lower ground floor. A 2012 exhibition covered the hospital's years as a district general hospital from 1960 to 1998, using film, objects, photographs and oral history recordings, and a centenary exhibition in 2015 showed memorabilia and prostheses, archive film and touch screens.

The permanent exhibition today is called Care, Kit & Courage and can be seen in the lower ground floor reception of the Bader Rehabilitation Unit. Online content from the exhibition is available on the archive website.
