About the museum
RAF Digby began in 1918 as RAF Scopwick and was renamed Digby in 1920. In 1937 it became a sector fighter airfield of No. 12 Group, Fighter Command, and its operations room directed the fighter squadrons of the Lima Sector over central England. No. 611 Squadron was based at the station from October 1939 to December 1940, together with Nos 46 and 504 Squadrons, and flew Spitfires during the Battle of Britain.
The semi-sunken operations block has been restored and is arranged as it would have looked on a typical day of the Battle of Britain. Chalk boards show the pilots and aircraft available to each squadron, their locations and the weather, and a large plotting table carries a map of central England and the surrounding sea. Visitors can see where the plotters and the sector controller worked. A separate room holds photographs, combat reports and objects connected with 611 Squadron.
The museum is staffed by volunteer guides and is on a working RAF station, so visits are arranged in advance and visitors must follow the station's security rules. Entry is free, and donations are welcome.
