About the museum
RAF Waddington opened in November 1916 as a Royal Flying Corps training station south of Lincoln. It took part in both World Wars, and the station became well known for its Bomber Command squadrons, including the low-level daylight raid on Augsburg flown by 44 Squadron in April 1942.
After the war Waddington served as a V-Force base during the Cold War and later supported the Vulcan bombers that flew the long-range Black Buck raids to the Falkland Islands in 1982. The station remains an active Royal Air Force base.
The heritage centre is run by volunteers on the station and holds a small collection of memorabilia, much of it donated by people who served in Lincolnshire. Its displays follow the history of the station from the First World War through Bomber Command, the V-Force and the Falklands conflict. Because the centre is inside a working military base, it is open to civilians and service personnel by appointment only, and free tours are arranged through the station.
