About the museum
RAF Elsham Wolds was an airfield in North Lincolnshire that opened in 1941 and is remembered above all for 103 and 576 Squadron. Today the area is mostly an industrial estate, but the memory of the station is kept alive by the RAF Elsham Wolds Association.
The Memorial Rooms are in a building belonging to Anglian Water at the south-west corner of the former airfield. Honours boards and plaques for the two squadrons line the entrance lobby. The museum opened around 2001 in a single room off the foyer and was extended into a neighbouring office about five years later. It shows a wide selection of artefacts, models and photographs about the airfield and RAF life in the Second World War.
Outside is a quiet memorial garden centred on the RAF Elsham Wolds memorial cairn, which was renovated in 2019. Plaques there include one for Operation Manna, which dropped food to the starving civilian population of the Netherlands in 1945.
