About the museum
Renfrew Museum is housed in Renfrew Town Hall and opened in 2012 as part of a major refurbishment of the building. It tells the story of the former Royal Burgh of Renfrew from medieval times to the present, using objects, pictures, film and audio. Renfrew is known as the Cradle of the Stewarts.
The displays are organised in four themes. Earth covers local life over the centuries, including 150 years of photographs of shops, houses and streets. Fire looks at heavy industry, especially boiler making at Babcock, once the largest boiler factory in the world. Air is about Renfrew Airport and local aviation, with a Merlin engine from a Spitfire built at Hillington. Water covers shipbuilding on the River Clyde.
The museum is managed by Renfrewshire Leisure, which trades as OneRen. The present town hall was built on the site in 1872-3, replacing an earlier building that had served as a jail until 1839.
