About the museum
Ridgmont Station stands on the Marston Vale Line, which was engineered by Robert Stephenson and opened in 1846 as the first railway to reach Bedford. For much of its life the line served the local brickworks. The station house, built in the Victorian Gothic Cottage Orné style, was largely unused for more than 40 years before it was restored and opened to the public as a heritage centre in 2014. The restoration has won several awards.
The centre includes a small museum in the original Victorian booking office, with historical displays and changing exhibitions on the story of the line, the people who lived and worked at the station and the local brickworks. A gift shop sells railway memorabilia, locally made gifts and books. Refreshments are served by the Friends of Ridgmont Station, and there is a courtyard garden with a community wellbeing garden project called Rails to Roots, which won an award for community engagement in 2026.
The centre is run for local communities by the Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity together with a volunteer team, the Friends of Ridgmont Station, who lead free guided tours that can be tailored to each group. Schools and groups are welcome all year round and can arrive by train, and a meeting room can be hired.
