About the museum
The Newport Pagnell Historical Society was founded in 1984 by a small group of people interested in the buildings and people of the town. In the 1990s it took over Chandos Hall, a former chapel on Silver Street that had been used as a meeting lodge by the Oddfellows until 1994. The society restored the building, adding an upper floor, an office, a kitchen, a toilet and display cabinets, and it now serves as the society's headquarters and museum.
The museum stores and shows items that have been donated or loaned to the society and stages changing exhibitions on local history. Past themes have included the railway, the town at war, sport and leisure, and the local car industry with the Aston Martin factory.
The permanent displays include old photographs, items linked to Taylor's mustard and the town's breweries, Oddfellows memorabilia, material about the business that became Aston Martin, records of coach, canal and rail transport, material on the early M1 motorway, Ancient Order of Foresters items and an Edwardian pram.
