About the museum
The original Deeside Railway was built between 1853 and 1866 to link Aberdeen with Ballater and was used regularly by the royal family on the way to Balmoral Castle. It was closed in stages in 1966 and 1967. In 1996 the Royal Deeside Railway Preservation Society was formed to bring a short section of the line at Milton of Crathes, east of Banchory, back to life.
Restoration work began in 2003, and a first mile of track opened in 2007. The first steam-hauled passenger service followed in 2010. The railway is run by volunteers, who have also moved a Victorian station building from the closed Oldmeldrum line to Milton of Crathes, where it is now used as the society's base.
The railway has preserved steam and diesel locomotives, among them the 1897 steam engine Bon-Accord and Class 03 diesel shunters, together with restored carriages. Trains run on about one mile of track from Milton of Crathes, and the return journey takes around 15 to 20 minutes. Special events such as cream tea trains, steam driver experiences and Santa Specials are held in addition to the ordinary running days.
