About the museum

The Scottish Football Museum was founded in 1994, first occupying a small section of the Museum of Transport at Kelvin Hall in Glasgow. In 2001 it moved to Hampden Park, the national stadium, where it celebrated its twentieth year in 2021. It was the first museum in Glasgow to receive VisitScotland's five-star rating.

The collection is recognised as nationally significant by Museums Galleries Scotland, and the museum is formally accredited as a national museum that does not receive government funding. It holds thousands of objects, including the world's oldest football cap and the ticket from the first official international match, played in 1872, as well as the original Scottish Cup of 1873, the oldest national football trophy in the world.

Fourteen galleries lead visitors from the humble nineteenth-century beginnings of the game to the present, with film footage of memorable matches, turnstiles and a dressing room from the old third Hampden Park, and the Scottish Football Hall of Fame. A guided stadium tour takes visitors along the players' route through the underground roadway, changing rooms and tunnel to the pitchside and the cup presentation area. The museum also runs the Football for All project, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, which digitises parts of its national archive.

Good to knowThe guided stadium tour usually lasts 45 to 60 minutes, and the museum suggests allowing at least as long again for the galleries. Weekday tours run once a day; weekend tours leave at 11:00, 12:30, 14:00 and 15:00. Tours do not run on Scotland matchdays or the two days before, or around cup semi-finals and finals.
