About the museum
Sleaford Museum shows the history of the market town of Sleaford and the surrounding district in Lincolnshire. The area has produced many Roman, Iron Age and Bronze Age finds, some of which are in the British Museum, but until 2015 the town had no permanent place to display its past.
It took about forty years to reach that goal. From the early 1970s the collection was kept in a temporary rented building and then in storage in a number of places. The Sleaford Museum Trust was founded in 1994, and ten years later it created a virtual museum on the internet. A Heritage Lottery grant allowed the volunteers to design and open the present museum between 2013 and 2015 in a regenerated town council building in Monument Gardens, under the motto Sharing Our Stories.
The museum is run entirely by volunteers and is a registered charity with a small committee. Its colourful displays of local artefacts and stories change frequently, and past exhibitions have covered subjects such as local pubs and inns, the gas and electric supply, Rauceby Hospital and the town's Southgate street. A local history talks programme and a memorial mosaic on the museum wall to the river campaigner Les Gostick also belong to the museum's story. Admission is free.
