About the museum
The Somme Association, a registered charity formed in 1990, built and owns the Somme Heritage Centre between Newtownards and Bangor in County Down. The centre opened in 1994 and was created partly with grant funding to commemorate the 36th (Ulster), 16th (Irish) and 10th (Irish) Divisions. It describes itself as a place for the study and interpretation of Ireland’s part in the First World War, with a special focus on the Battle of the Somme.
The museum is visited through hourly guided tours with expert guides. They lead visitors through reconstructed First World War trenches and let them see and hear what life was like for a soldier. Time is also allowed to look at the other exhibitions.
The collection covers the Great War in depth. Since 2000 the museum has widened its scope to the Second World War and later conflicts, and it holds a growing oral history archive. School groups, families and members of the public visit regularly, and the Association also looks after the Ulster Memorial Tower at Thiepval in France.
