About the museum
The South Nottinghamshire Hussars were raised in 1794 as a volunteer cavalry regiment. Their early duties included helping to keep order during food riots in Nottingham and the Luddite disturbances of 1811. The troops were formed into a regiment in 1826 and were known as the South Notts Hussars from the 1870s. The regiment served in the Boer War and in Egypt, Gallipoli, Macedonia and Palestine in the First World War.
In 1922 the regiment was changed into an artillery unit and its members became gunners. In the Second World War its guns fought in North Africa, and at Knightsbridge in June 1942 the regiment was ordered to fire to the last round, an action recorded as one of the most celebrated in the history of the Royal Artillery. The yeomanry battery was later placed in suspended animation in 2014.
The museum is run by the South Notts Hussars Association, which was formed in 1928, and is housed at the Army Reserve Centre on Hucknall Lane in Bulwell. It is a small regimental collection that can be seen by appointment only. The regiment also contributes a display to the Royal Lancers and Nottinghamshire Yeomanry Museum at Thoresby Park.
