About the museum
Spelthorne Museum was founded in 1980 and tells the story of the borough of Spelthorne, the area around Staines-upon-Thames in north-west Surrey. It is run entirely by volunteers and managed by the Spelthorne Archaeology and Local History Group, formed in 2010 when the local archaeological field group and the Friends of Spelthorne Museum merged.
The museum has moved into the new Library Hub in the Elmsleigh Centre, next to Staines bus station, where it occupies space on the first floor with some displays in the ground-floor library area.
The galleries follow the area’s past from the prehistoric, Roman and Georgian periods, many of them using local archaeological finds. They include a large model of Roman Staines, the medieval London Stone, an old fire engine from 1738, a Victorian kitchen and displays on Magna Carta, Staines linoleum and the Second World War. Changing exhibitions and a small shop selling local history books complete the visit.
