About the museum
Sufton Court is a small Palladian mansion built in 1788 by the architect James Wyatt. It was built for James Hereford, an ancestor of the present owner, and the house is still privately owned. Wyatt also designed the interiors, of which the finest is the Music Room, now used as the Drawing Room.
The house stands above the rivers Wye and Lugg at Mordiford, east of Hereford. The surrounding parkland was laid out by Humphry Repton, whose “red book” of proposals survives, and visitors can walk in the park during the house’s opening periods.
The house is not open regularly. It welcomes visitors for two fortnights a year, with guided tours on each open day, and members of Historic Houses are admitted free.
