About the museum
Sutton Park is an early Georgian villa-style country house of red brick near Sutton-on-the-Forest, north of York. It was built in 1730 and was later altered by Thomas Atkinson for Philip Harland, who inherited the house in 1750. The ornate plasterwork inside, including the Rococo entrance hall and fruit motifs in the library, was designed by Giuseppe Cortese.
The Sheffield family bought the house in 1963 and brought art and furniture from their former seat at Normanby Hall. Panelling and a mantelpiece for the study came from Potternewton Hall in Leeds. The house remains the private home of the Sheffield family and is open to the public only for a limited period each year.
Visitors see the house on guided tours. The gardens, which won a gold medal in the 2024 Yorkshire in Bloom campaign, can be visited separately. Miss Daisy’s Tearooms serve refreshments on the days the property is open.
