About the museum
Tacla Taid was founded by Arfon Williams, a mechanic who grew up around lorries and tractors on Anglesey. At fifteen he rebuilt a 1949 Ferguson tractor, and later he set up a vehicle repair business and a testing station in Gaerwen. Over the years he collected old, abandoned vehicles and farm machinery and restored them in his spare time.
In the late 1990s he decided to build a museum around his collection rather than sell it. The Anglesey Transport and Agriculture Museum opened in April 2001, despite the disruption caused by the foot-and-mouth epidemic. It describes itself as the largest museum of its kind in Wales and is still run by the family.
The collection has grown to more than 100 vehicles from the 1920s onwards, including cars, motorbikes, tractors, commercial and military vehicles, static engines and a jet plane. Many are shown in a replica cobbled street from the 1940s together with thousands of items of memorabilia. Several vehicles have appeared on television and in films.
