About the museum
Tayside Police Museum is a joint venture between Police Scotland, Angus Council and the Kirriemuir Heritage Trust. It occupies the ground floor of Kirriemuir police station in Reform Street and opened in 2013.
The six rooms follow the history of policing in the city of Dundee and the counties of Perth and Kinross and of Angus, from the early 1800s to the 1980s. Displays of objects, documents and photographs cover uniforms, equipment, communications, offensive weapons, the police pipe band and special constables.
One exhibit looks at William Henry Bury, the last person hanged in Dundee, who went to the gallows in 1889 for the murder of his wife and who, when confessing, claimed to be Jack the Ripper. The museum is run by volunteers and entry is free.
