About the museum
The Thames Valley Police Museum looks back at the history of Thames Valley Police, which was formed on 1 April 1968 by merging five earlier forces: Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxford City, Oxfordshire and Reading Borough. It is housed at the force's training centre at Sulhamstead, near Reading, in a building linked to Sulhamstead House, which dates from 1744.
The collection includes original artefacts from famous cases, among them the Great Train Robbery of 1963, the case of the baby farmer Amelia Dyer from 1896 and the Denham murders of 1870. There are also police uniforms, equipment, medals and scene-of-crime evidence.
The museum is run by the force with a part-time curator and is inside an operational police site. For this reason visitors have to stay with a member of the museum team throughout their visit.
