About the museum
The Clansman Centre occupies a nineteenth-century schoolhouse beside the canal in Fort Augustus, at the southern end of Loch Ness. It presents itself as a small museum of seventeenth-century Highland life.
Inside, the interior of a Highland turf house has been recreated and serves as a small theatre. Traditional tools, weapons and other old items hang from its walls and ceiling. A presenter in authentic clansman dress shows how Highland families ate, lived and survived, explains the clan system and local culture, demonstrates how the kilt and plaid are worn, and shows the use of historic weapons. Two members of the audience are usually invited to try on traditional dress.
The centre also screens a short film about the clansman in the turf-house theatre and runs a shop that specialises in Celtic and locally made crafts and gifts, many of them made in Scotland.
