About the museum
The Highland Drovers Exhibition tells the story of the drovers who walked cattle and other livestock from the Highlands and Islands to markets in the south. It is run by the Highland Livestock Heritage Society and is housed upstairs on the upper concourse of Dingwall and Highland Marts, the working livestock market in Dingwall.
The exhibition was formally opened by HRH The Princess Royal in July 2008. It combines mounted wall displays with an archive on the drovers, held in both electronic and paper form. Plans for a larger visitor centre and research library were part of the original Highland Drover Project.
In 2011 a bronze sculpture by Lucy Poett, showing a drover with a Highland bull and a dog, was unveiled at the mart. It commemorates the livestock breeders, farmers, crofters and drovers of the Highlands and Islands. The mart also has the Drover's Rest Café.
