About the museum
The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow was founded in 1599 by a Royal Charter from King James VI. Its founders wanted to regulate and improve medicine, surgery and pharmacy in Glasgow and the west of Scotland. Today it has more than 15,000 members around the world and is based in St Vincent Street in the city centre.
The College's heritage collections cover more than six centuries. They include thousands of medical and surgical instruments, rare books, archives and pictures. The College holds full Museum Accreditation, and many items are being digitised and added to the heritage website.
Visitors can see the current exhibition in the exhibition space on the ground floor, which at present is linked to vaccination. The library reading room is on the second floor. Tours of the heritage collections for individuals and groups can be arranged on request.
