About the museum
Glasgow Central Station opened on 1 August 1879, built by the Caledonian Railway on the north bank of the River Clyde. Passenger numbers soon outgrew it, and it was rebuilt and enlarged between 1901 and 1905. Today it is a Category A listed building managed by Network Rail and the only Network Rail station in the UK that offers guided tours.
The tour takes visitors to parts of the working station that are normally closed to the public, including the tunnels and vaults beneath the concourse and a disused Victorian platform. During the First World War the vaults served as a temporary mortuary for soldiers, and in the Second World War the glass roof was painted black as protection against bombing.
A small museum forms part of the tour. It was created for the tours in 2021 with support from the Glasgow School of Art. The museum cannot be visited on its own: it is seen as part of the booked guided tour, and a shortened version covering the concourse and museum is offered to primary schools.
