About the museum
The Shell Museum in the north Norfolk village of Glandford was built in 1915 by Sir Alfred Jodrell of Bayfield Hall to house the shell collection he had gathered over some sixty years. Estate workmen built it under Thomas Holbrook, in a style that matches the village. It describes itself as the oldest purpose-built museum in Norfolk.
The collection holds seashells from around the world, many of them brightly coloured, and the museum calls it the finest of its kind in the country. Alongside the shells there are fossils, birds' eggs, pottery and jewellery, and finds from the area around Glandford, including an axehead. Some curiosities include a piece of Pompeii and a sugar bowl said to have belonged to Queen Elizabeth I.
The museum also shows work by the fisherman-artist John Craske, including a tapestry of the Norfolk coast and an oil painting. It is run by a small private trust, which receives no public grants and depends on income from visitors.
